Wellcome Trust: COVID-19 – Understanding the Biological Significance of SARS-CoV-2 Variants
Closing Date: 28/04/2022
One-off call for multidisciplinary teams to investigate the biological significance of SARS-CoV-2 variants, with a focus on laboratory investigations in immunology, virology or structural biology.
Founded in 1936, the Wellcome Trust is an independent foundation that seeks to improve health by supporting researchers, addressing big health challenges, campaigning for better science and encouraging everyone to get involved with science and health research.
The Trust’s COVID-19 – Understanding the Biological Significance of SARS-CoV-2 Variants one-off call provides funding for multidisciplinary teams to help improve understanding of the biological significance of SARS-CoV-2 variants using systematic approaches and focusing on laboratory investigations in immunology, virology or structural biology. The Trust is interested in approaches that connect laboratory characterisation with the detection of variants and genomic surveillance, as well as the clinical presentation.
The scheme’s aim is to produce research that is relevant and beneficial to low and middle-income countries (LMICs). The research must support national policymakers in preventing and controlling the COVID-19 pandemic and should strengthen local capability in LMICs for a research response to future infectious disease outbreaks of other pathogens. The project should identify a pathway(s) to rapidly share the research outputs to influence national and/or global decision-making.
Applicants should consider how to involve and respond to the needs and concerns of relevant public stakeholders and facilitate an open and transparent environment to ensure the research is trustworthy as well as acceptable to and supported by relevant communities.
