RIKEN 2020 Hakubi Fellows Junior PI Programme Open for Applications
RIKEN is a private research foundation, based in Tokyo, and is Japan’s largest comprehensive research institution. RIKEN encompasses a network of world-class research centres and institutes across Japan and is renowned for high quality research in a diverse range of scientific disciplines.
The RIKEN Hakubi Fellows programme aims to recruit exceptionally talented researchers to engage in ambitious, independent research at RIKEN research centres in Japan. The programme seeks to develop the next generation of leading researchers with a global outlook, and actively stimulate interactions among the Fellows with diverse backgrounds and to create an intellectual hub of scientists with different disciplines.
Research in all areas of the natural and mathematical sciences is eligible for consideration, including research in boundary areas with the humanities and social sciences. Research topics with the potential for high impact scientifically or socially, including unexplored areas, and research on issues humanity currently faces – such as the Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations – are particularly welcome.
Applicants should be talented researchers who will be able to engage in research at RIKEN on a full-time basis, with basic ability to manage their laboratories as PIs. A doctoral degree is not necessarily required. Hakubi Fellows are offered salary and annual research budget and are assigned research space at the RIKEN facility in Wako (or other RIKEN facility in Japan, as necessary). Fellows will also receive assistance and advice from the head of the Programme and mentors (assigned to each Fellow) for setting up the research unit and for day-to-day matters on laboratory management.
One Hakubi Fellowship is awarded under the Sechi Kato Program and is reserved for a female candidate.
Funding includes:
Research budget of between 10,000,000 and 40,000,000 JPY per year.
Monthly salary of 910,000 JPY.
Commuting expenses of up to 55,000 JPY per month.
Housing allowance of up to half of monthly rent, to a maximum of 40,000 JPY for single accommodation and 60,000 JPY for family accommodation.
Relocation allowance.
The maximum allowable contract period is seven years (standard five years with a possible extension of two years). Two Hakubi Fellowships will be offered in 2020.
Applications are submitted via the RIKEN website in response to the annual call for applications.
Applicants must first register on the online application system by the deadline of 14 June 2019.
Once registered, applicants must then upload the requested documentation (application form, research proposal, letters of recommendation etc.) by the deadline of 28 June 2019.
