New Funding Round for GPEI Polio Research Committee Grants

The Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) is a public-private partnership led by national governments to eradicate polio worldwide. It is spearheaded by the World Health Organization (WHO), Rotary International, US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

GPEI’s Polio Research Committee (PRC) issues biannual calls for proposals for research in support of the Polio Endgame Strategy 2019-2023. The current priority of the PRC is to generate new data or information in the following areas:

Vaccine schedule immunogenicity

Surveillance

Product development

Epidemiology/virology

Monitoring and evaluation

Basic immunology

Containment

Well-articulated funding bids that propose research projects that will contribute significantly to polio eradication are sought. The PRC funds a variety of studies from many disciplines including basic science research, operational research, mathematical modelling projects, epidemiological studies and clinical studies.

The scheme is open to research institutions and private companies in any country. Preference will be given to proposals developed by GPEI partner agencies and their research collaborators. However, other institutions may also submit a proposal if it addresses the priorities.

There are no set minimum or maximum funding levels. The majority of projects are between $50,000 and $300,000. Projects may range from 12 to 24 months in duration.

The second biannual application deadline in 2020 is 30 September.
