Medical Research Foundation 2021 Emerging Leaders Prize for COVID-19 Research
The Medical Research Foundation (MRF) presents the annual Emerging Leaders Prize to recognise outstanding researchers in the early stages of research independence who have already had an impact in their field and have demonstrated their potential to be the research leaders of the future. The prize focuses on a different field of scientific research every year and is intended to support the career development of the award winners by funding activities such as personalised leadership training, collaboration development and flexible working opportunities.
The 2021 Emerging Leaders Prize will celebrate researchers who have made an impact in COVID-19 research.
Application is open to anyone at the relevant career stage who is doing research on COVID-19, including clinicians, lab-based scientists, allied health professionals etc. Applicants should hold a PhD, DPhil or MD and must be based at a UK HEI, Research Council research institute, hospital, GP practice/clinic or other independent research organisation.
Applicants will come from a wide range of scientific fields, and since January 2020 will have re-directed their research towards the pandemic. Applicants will be required to demonstrate their track record in their original field and their impact on COVID-19 or related areas.
Applicants may have conducted COVID-19 research related to (but not limited to) the following scientific areas: virology, viral phylogenetics, epidemiology, immunology, transmission, neuroscience, clinical symptoms and management, cardiology, stroke, vaccine development, therapeutic development, long-term effects of COVID-19 including Paediatric Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome associated with COVID-19 (PIMS-TS) and ‘Long-COVID’, and child, adolescent or adult mental health.
The Foundation awards up to £200,000 each year, which includes a top prize of £100,000 and smaller prizes of various amounts for second place and highly-commended entries.
Winners can use the prize money flexibly to support their professional research career development.

Completed applications/nominations for the 2021 Emerging Leaders Prize must be submitted by the deadline on 21 April 2021 (noon).
