Matsumae International Foundation Research Fellowship Open for Applications

The Matsumae International Foundation (MIF) is a non-governmental organisation founded in 1979 for the specific purpose of providing support for outstanding young researchers from throughout the world to further their research in Japan in order to foster greater understanding of Japan and establish links of trust and friendship.

Every year the Foundation offers around 20 MIF Research Fellowships to enable postdoctoral researchers to spend between three and six months at a host institution in Japan to conduct a nominated research project. The 2020/2021 Fellowships will take place between April 2021 and March 2022.

Applicants must:

Be of non-Japanese nationality.

Hold a PhD or have equivalent academic qualifications and have firm positions of employment in their home countries to which they should return to.

Be no older than 49 years of age.

Have sufficient conversational ability in English or Japanese.

Have no past or current experience of staying in Japan (other than short-term visits for conferences or sightseeing).

Research proposals in the fields of engineering, medicine and natural science are given priority.

Applicants are free to select the host institution in Japan (e.g. universities, national research institutions or the corresponding facilities in private sector) in which to carry out their research. Applicants will be responsible for securing an offer of invitation from the proposed host institution.

Successful applicants receive:

A monthly stipend of ¥220,000 for tuition payments, expenses, research materials and miscellaneous living costs.

Overseas travel accident/sickness insurance.

An economy class return ticket to/from Tokyo.

A ¥120,000 start-up fund on arrival for initial costs.

Application forms are to be type-written in English and must be sent by post to MIF in Japan with all relevant supporting documentation.

Applications for the 2021/22 Fellowships should be received by the deadline of 30 June 2020.

The application must be submitted from the applicant’s home country. Successful applicants will be announced in December 2020.
