Launch of 2020 European Drug Prevention Prize

The European Drug Prevention Prize is now open to submissions for 2020.

First launched in 2004, the Prize is awarded every two years to high-quality drug prevention projects that fully involve young people.

The Pompidou Group awards the Prize to encourage the development of drug prevention work where young people are actively participating, stemming from the belief that the genuine involvement of young people improves the possibilities of successful drug prevention.

Projects can be government sponsored, run by NGOs (non-governmental organisations), in the private sector, or organised by local communities, and do not have to be funded to be eligible – they can be entirely voluntary. However, projects must be:

Wholly or mainly in the area of drug prevention, which can include illegal drugs, alcohol, tobacco, volatile substances (eg glues, gases, aerosols), new psychoactive substances (NPS, including so-called ‘legal highs’) and prescription and over-the-counter medicines when they are misused.

Must involve young people (under the age of 25 years).

Currently running, or have recently finished.

Run by more than one person and have some formal structure, such as a management committee or steering group.

Projects may be submitted by eligible organisations in the 47 Council of Europe member States, including the UK, as well as Pompidou partner countries. Up to three youth projects will each receive a trophy and prize money of €5,000. Projects including innovative approaches, particularly those using new technologies, as well as targeting young people under 18, are particularly encouraged to apply.

The deadline for submissions to the 2020 Prize is 30 November 2020.
