Invitation of Senior Social Sciences and Humanities Researchers to France – First Call for 2022

Mobility support is available from the FMSH for senior researchers to visit France for up to six weeks during 2022 to carry out research in social sciences and the humanities.

The Fondation Maison des Sciences de l’Homme (FMSH) aims to foster excellence in humanities and social sciences research by promoting collaboration and by supporting scientific networks, working groups and experimental research teams in France.

Through its Associate Research Directors programme (DEA – Directeurs d’Études Associés), FMSH encourages senior scientific researchers to visit France for a period of between four and six weeks, to carry out research-related activities such as field studies, bibliographic research and archival work.

Eligible candidates are professors and senior researchers holding a PhD (or equivalent) working in institutions of higher education and research outside of France. Applicants must be no older than 65 at the time of their visit.

The programme incorporates a recently launched strand providing support specifically to researchers working under difficult political conditions resulting in impediments to their progress. Those applying under this ‘impeded research’ category must be able to demonstrate that their research has been hindered by restrictive political situations or similar obstacles to academic freedom.

Funding consists of a monthly allowance of €3,400 which is awarded to support travel and living expenses. In addition, FMSH provides logistical support such as help with visa applications.

Calls for applications are usually launched three times each year.

Applications to the first call for visits taking place in 2022 must be submitted by 30 June 2021 (17:00 Paris time).

Applications under the impeded research category for visits taking place in 2022 must be submitted by 15 July 2021 (17:00 Paris time).

FMSH expects to announce funding decisions in October or November 2021. Research visits supported through this call must take place between 1 January and 15 November 2022, excluding the academic summer vacation period (15 July – 31 August).
