Global 3Rs Awards Open for Nominations

The Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care International (AAALAC International) runs the Global 3Rs Awards programme to recognise significant innovative contributions toward the 3Rs of animal research to advance ethical science. The scheme is open to researchers working in any area of biology (eg basic science, discovery, development, teaching, testing, manufacture for new medicines, vaccines, medical devices or healthcare products for humans and animals).

Up to four regional awards are available: North America, Europe, Pacific Rim and the Rest of the World. Award nominations must be based on a primary research paper that advances any of the 3Rs (ie the Refinement, Replacement or Reduction of animal use) and has been published in a peer-reviewed journal in the last three years.

Research may include modifications to existing research techniques or any innovative research approach including, but not limited to: improvements to whole-animal models, tissue-based models (eg cell lines, tissue cultures), molecular techniques (eg proteomics), analytic and computational models, study design or technique refinements (eg sampling technologies, improved test methods), and translational medicine applications. Meta-analyses that develop fundamental new insights into the 3Rs are also eligible, but the methodology must be described within the paper.

The scheme is open to researchers (nominated authors, Principal Investigators or research team leaders) in academia or industry who have published a primary research paper in a peer-reviewed journal in the last three years. Researchers can be based in any country. Candidates may be nominated or can self-nominate. Only one paper can be nominated.

Up to four awards of $5,000 each are available.

Nominations must be submitted by the deadline of 1 June 2021 (16:00 EDT).
