Funding to Support New NERC Public Engagement with Research Strategy
Through the Grant to Embed Engagement initiative, the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) is seeking to fund current or planned projects that align with or support the new NERC Public Engagement with Research Strategy. The strategy’s success relies on successful collaboration with partners and stakeholders, and NERC wishes to support institutions with their engagement activities. Small grants are available for research organisations working towards:
Raising the profile of research where the priorities of NERC’s new Public Engagement with Research Strategy and applicant institution priorities overlap.
Identifying, in the context of the new NERC Public Engagement Strategy:
Key researchers in their institutions involved in public engagement with environmental science and how networks can be strengthened/set up.
How to better support public engagement with environmental science research.
Who is already carrying out excellent public engagement with environmental science research and how to raise the profile of their work.
How to fully evaluate public engagement with environmental science research and make use of the resultant knowledge.
Projects may map out key stakeholders in environmental science public engagement, address barriers to current NERC researchers delivering public engagement with research, create network(s) focused on delivery against the Public Engagement with Research Strategy and raise the profile of NERC researchers already carrying out engaged research. These suggestions are not exhaustive and other public engagement activities will be considered. Any activities must be free at the point of access for public audiences.
Proposals will be accepted from applicants (Principal Investigators) who are normally eligible for NERC grants and are based within eligible research organisations, ie the Principal Investigator must reside in the UK, be employed by a UK higher education institution, research council institute or recognised independent research organisation, and be employed at lecturer (or equivalent) level or above.
Up to 15 projects costing between £2,000 and £5,000 will be funded. Projects must be delivered between 1 November 2019 and 31 March 2020. Fully justified direct costs incurred in delivering the project can be funded.
There is a one-stage assessment process for this call and applicants are required to confirm their intention to apply (via a one-page proposal) by email. The intention to apply proposal must be submitted by 30 September 2019.
