EU Consults on New Framework for Forest Monitoring and Strategic Plans

Consultation to gather views on how to assess the state of forests, how to monitor forests and how to develop strategic visions.

The EU is seeking to gather the views of all relevant stakeholders on how to assess the state of forests, how to monitor forests and how to develop strategic visions. The aim of the initiative is to develop an EU-wide forest observation framework to provide open access to detailed, accurate, regular and timely information on the condition and management of EU forests, and on the many products and ecosystem services that forests provide.

This information will lead to more data-driven decision-making on forests. It is expected to increase public trust in forest management, reduce illegal logging, incentivise and reward more sustainable forest management, and support the adaptation of forests to climate change.

A wide range of stakeholders are invited to provide input, notably Member State and regional competent authorities in charge of forestry, the environment, climate, spatial and urban planning and statistics; NGOs; business and interest associations, especially forest owners and managers, and providers of field monitoring and remote-sensing services and technologies; relevant experts and academics and related institutions; members of the public; and EU institutions, agencies and international organisations.

The consultation period is open until 17 November 2022 (00:00 CET).
