Deadline Announced for PTES UK Mammals Grants

The People’s Trust for Endangered Species (PTES) is a UK registered charity founded on the objective of ensuring a future for many endangered wildlife species throughout the world.

The PTES UK Mammals Grants scheme provides financial support to scientific researchers, voluntary conservation organisations and consortia to fund work that is aimed at the conservation of mammal species in the UK. Funding can cover aspects such as scientific research, practical habitat management work, reintroduction, monitoring programmes and educational projects.

Priority is given to research undertaken to understand the ecological and conservation needs of species previously listed on the UK Biodiversity Action Plan (UK BAP) priority list. In particular, PTES is interested in work that unlocks a conservation issue – something that has clear, practical implications for further conservation of one or more species.

PTES has identified three key themes under which there are a variety of research questions to be addressed, which will help to inform and direct future conservation work on the UK’s priority mammal species. These research questions reflect priorities identified by the various species expert groups and other published targets. The three priority research themes are:

1) Human impacts and mitigation

Climate change

Housing and building development

Road and infrastructure development

Farming, food production and land management

Impact of introduced mammals and diseases

Toxic chemicals and pollution

2) Habitat availability, loss and modification

Habitat availability, suitability and connectivity

Improving and restoring habitats

Habitat management

Habitat fragmentation, modification and loss

3) Monitoring mammals

Estimating distribution and abundance of species

National monitoring schemes

Grant proposals that address any of these questions are more likely to be given priority although proposals addressing other pressing conservation issues will continue to be considered. The research themes do not include priority actions for marine mammals, although PTES is happy to accept applications for research on these species; the applications need to demonstrate the need for the actions suggested in any proposal.

Eligible applicants are scientific researchers, voluntary conservation organisations and consortia working within the field of mammal conservation projects in the UK. Individual awards are likely to be between £10,000 and £20,000. The average amount granted per project is around £15,000.

Applications must be submitted by the deadline of 27 October 2019.
