Call Launched for Second Semester of 2023 EFEO Field Scholarships

EFEO has launched a call for the second semester of its 2023 field scholarships programme, enabling students to complete field research at an EFEO centre in Asia.

The École française d’Extrême-Orient (EFEO – French School of Asian Studies) is an associated college of Université Paris Sciences et Lettres (PSL University) dedicated to the study of Asian societies. Its mission is to conduct interdisciplinary research on the civilisations of Asia, extending from India to Japan. EFEO consists of a network of research centres in several Asian countries.

EFEO Field Scholarships are available for research students and tenable for periods of research in an EFEO Centre in Asia. The research must involve humanities or social sciences applied to the history and civilisations of Asia.

Applications are welcome from Master’s 2 and doctoral students around the world. Eligible applicants must hold a BA or MA degree or a recognised equivalent qualification.

Candidates must have a working knowledge of French and good command of the language(s) required to complete the field research project.

The scholarship includes a monthly stipend varying between €700 and €1,360 according to the academic level of the applicant and the chosen destination country.

Scholarships have a duration of one to six months (MA students are eligible for field research scholarships not exceeding two months). However, candidates may be awarded up to two scholarships for a total duration not exceeding nine months.

Scholarships will take place between 1 June 2023 and 31 December 2023.

Applications must be submitted by 13 March 2023.
