British Lung Foundation Funds Now Open

The British Lung Foundation (BLF) supports people affected by lung disease and works to promote a greater understanding of the disease. BLF offers funding to support clinical, laboratory and/or epidemiological research carried out by medically qualified researchers, postdoctoral scientists or allied health professionals in the UK. The following research grants are now open:

BLF Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis Project Grant

With support from Iceland Foods Charitable Foundation and Janus Henderson Foundation, funding is offered for research into idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. Grants of up to £135,000 are available for a maximum of three years. The preliminary application deadline is 8 February 2021.

BLF Mesothelioma Research Network Collaborative Pump-Priming Research Grant

Support is given for collaborative research into mesothelioma, a type of cancer that is usually caused by inhaled asbestos fibres and forms in the lining of the lungs, abdomen or heart.

Principal applicants and all co-applicants must be members of the BLF Mesothelioma Research Network. At least one co-applicant must be based at a different institution to the principal applicant.

Grants up to a maximum of £40,000 are available for a period of up to three years. The full application deadline is 19 April 2021.

Malcolm Weallans Pulmonary Fibrosis Research Grant

BLF and the Pulmonary Fibrosis Trust have made available the Malcolm Weallans Pulmonary Fibrosis Research Grant to support research into pulmonary fibrosis.

Grants up to a maximum of £40,000 are available for a period of up to three years. The full application deadline is 19 April 2021.

BLF/Catalina Mesothelioma Research Grant

With support from Catalina Services UK Limited, funding is available for research into mesothelioma. The following grants are available:

Clinical trial award to support trials of new or existing molecules (either molecules that are not yet licenced for any indication or those that are already licenced for use in other indications). Grants are up to £500,000 for a maximum of four years. The preliminary application deadline is 8 February 2021.

Project and pump priming grants for research into improved early diagnosis. Project grants are up to £330,000 for a maximum period of three years and the preliminary application deadline is 8 February 2021. Pump priming grants are up to £40,000 for a maximum of 18 months and the full application deadline is 19 April 2021.

Collaboration is encouraged, both within and outside the UK, but the grant-holding institution must be based in the UK. Applications involving early career investigators are welcomed.
