BMVI Initiative Seeks Concepts for Pioneer 5G Projects in Germany

As part of the German Federal government’s overall 5G infrastructure strategy ‘5x5G’, the German Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure (Bundesministerium für Verkehr und digitale Infrastruktur – BMVI) is now seeking proposals from consortia who will develop initial concepts for pioneer 5G projects in model areas. The concepts will lay the foundation for future projects which will test and develop application-oriented solutions under real-world conditions.

The focus of the scheme is on applications in the areas of energy, health, Industry 4.0, transport, agriculture and logistics. Concepts should aim for innovative solutions which will benefit users and the mobile communications sector as well as aim for advances in the area of information and communication technologies. This may include, eg:

Demonstration of innovative business models and applications.

Efficient integration of existing communication networks.

Increased synergy effects.

Involvement of users from trade, industry and the public sector as well as private consumers.

Efficient and sustainable use of resources.

The aim of the funding scheme is to encourage competition for the best possible concepts in order to ensure smooth implementation and stabilisation of 5G compatible applications.

Funding is initially supplied for the development of concepts for 5G projects in model areas. In a second phase, the BMVI will then provide funding for the implementation of projects.

Eligible for funding are consortia bringing together local and regional authorities with research institutions, commercial businesses and associations.

Funding is provided in the form of a non-refundable project grant on the basis of eligible project-related costs or expenses. The maximum funding amount for the first programme phase is €100,000.

The deadline for applications is 17 September 2019.
