Blueprints for Emergency Ventilation Equipment: Launch of Idea Competition to Help Tackle COVID-19
The ‘Give a Breath’ challenge is launched jointly by the German research organisation Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft and the insurance company Munich Re. It is designed to alleviate the consequences of the coronavirus pandemic for heavily affected areas around the globe.
The idea competition sets out to identify the best designs for emergency ventilation equipment which will allow for immediate, decentralised production via global 3D-printing or other rapid manufacturing capabilities. Individuals and teams are invited to submit their ideas for feasible and digitally distributable blueprints for the following types of emergency ventilation equipment:
Non-invasive ventilators.
Consumables, such as respiratory masks, valves and oxygen tanks.
The equipment to be developed should be designed for use in the decentralised treatment of non-intensive care COVID-19 patients, in order to reduce demand for hospitalisation. In addition, the challenge is also seeking ideas for the education and training of ad-hoc support workers.
The selected digital blueprints will be provided to governments and states around the world to help them to start decentralised large scale production where it is needed the most.
Ideas should be submitted by 3 April 2020.
