Biodiversa+ European Partnership Launches Third Joint Call for Proposals

Approximately €40 million has been allocated to the third Biodiversa+ transnational joint research call focusing on ‘Nature-Based Solutions for biodiversity, human well-being and transformative change (BiodivNBS)’.

Biodiversa+, the European Biodiversity Partnership under Horizon Europe, has launched a new transnational joint research call on Nature-based solutions for biodiversity, human well-being and transformative change (referred to as BiodivNBS).

The call aims to support research on biodiversity to gain a better understanding of the tipping points and trade-offs and underlying mechanisms affecting Nature-based Solutions, and their successful implementation with respect to the benefits for nature, human wellbeing and societal transformation.

To do so, it will cover the following three non-exclusive research themes:

  • Synergies and trade-offs of Nature-based Solutions in the context of human wellbeing.
  • Nature-based Solutions mitigating anthropogenic drivers of biodiversity loss.
  • The contribution of Nature-Based solutions for just transformative change.

The call will cover transnational, interdisciplinary, transdisciplinary and cross-sectoral research on Nature-based Solutions in all parts of the world. All realms (ie terrestrial, marine, coastal, and freshwater) apply.

A global budget of approximately €40 million has been provisionally reserved by 38 funding organisations from 31 countries, together with the European Commission, from the following countries:

Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Bulgaria, Canada, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, France, Georgia, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, The Netherlands and Tunisia.

Participation by Morocco and Turkey is to be confirmed.

The project must be transnational and involve eligible research partners from at least three different countries participating in the call and requesting support from at least three different funding organisations; including eligible research partners from at least two different EU Member States or Associated Countries participating in the call.

Eligibility requirements, national/regional topics of interest, eligible costs and funding provisions vary according to the respective funding organisation’s regulations. Project partners must therefore refer and adhere to their own regional/national regulations and scientific remits, as detailed in the relevant regional/national announcements.

The third Biodiversa+ call officially launched on 11 September 2023. A two-step application procedure applies, with a closing date for the submission of mandatory pre-proposals on 10 November 2023 (15:00 CET).

An information webinar for potential applicants is expected to take place on 26 September 2023.
