Arctic Research Icebreaker Consortium (ARICE) Call for Ship-Time Proposals Now Open
The EU funded Arctic Research Icebreaker Consortium (ARICE) is intended to address the lack of available research icebreakers from Europe and beyond that can operate yearlong in the ice covered Arctic Ocean. It provides transnational access to four European and two international research icebreakers based on scientific excellence of research proposals.
The ARICE2019 Call for ship-time proposals is now open. This Call is for ship-time proposals requesting access to MSV Fennica, RV Kronprins Haakon and IB Oden to carry out ship-based research activities within any field of marine science in the Arctic Ocean.
Specific access conditions may apply for each vessel.
MSV Fennica
The scientific disciplines Marine Ecosystems and Physical Oceanography can be addressed with this vessel. Proposals will be considered for a total ship time of 15 days “port to port” (Finnish port) with a maximum working time of seven operational days; or for seven operational days in Greenland sea or Fram Strait or Barents Sea. Applicants are encouraged to discuss the initial feasibility of their work and details of the cruise while they prepare their application.
Dates: summer/autumn 2021, from 1 May to 15 December.
The dedicated budget for travel and shipping expenses should not exceed €45,000.
Please note: the availability of MS Fennica still needs to be confirmed through an amendment to the ARICE proposal submitted to the EC, and no commitment can be made before the amendment is approved.
RV Kronprins Haakon
Proposals to RV Kronprins Haakon will be accepted to perform research associated with the annual survey cruise of the Norwegian Polar Institute in the Fram Strait. The total length of the expedition is expected to be three to four weeks. Proposals should be for single activity of seven days in 2020 or 2021, or two years activity consisting of three/four days in August/September 2020, and three/four days in August/September 2021.
The scientific disciplines that can be addressed with this vessel are as follows:
Atmosphere
Sea ice
Ocean
Ecosystem and Biogeochemistry
Note: marine geology that would require sediment coring cannot be supported during these cruises.
The dedicated budget for travel and shipping expenses of equipment should not exceed €45,000.
IB Oden
Proposals to IB Oden will be accepted to perform research associated with the Synoptic Arctic Survey (SAS) in the Western High Arctic Ocean between Svalbard and Ellesmere Island.
The Scientific disciplines that can be addressed with this vessel are Marine Ecosystems, Physical Oceanography, Carbon Cycle and Ocean Acidification.
Dates: August to September 2020. The expedition is planned to take a minimum of six weeks.
The dedicated budget for travel and shipping expenses of equipment should not exceed €45,000.
The deadline for proposals for all three vessels is 3 July 2019, 12:00 CEST.
