Harkness Fellowships in Health Care Policy and Practice Open to Applications

The Commonwealth Fund is a private foundation based in the USA that aims to promote a high performing health care system that achieves better access, improved quality and greater efficiency, particularly for society’s most vulnerable.

The Harkness Fellowships in Health Care Policy and Practice provide an opportunity for mid-career health services researchers and practitioners from Australia, Canada, France, Germany, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway and the UK to spend up to 12 months in the USA to conduct original research and provide the opportunity to work with leading US health policy experts. An organised course of seminars throughout the visit will enhance the fellowship experience.

Applicants should show significant promise as a policy-oriented health services researcher or practitioner (ie clinician, health services manager, government official or journalist). Additionally, applicants must have demonstrated expertise in health policy issues and a track record of informing health policy through research, policy analysis, health services or clinical leadership. There is no age limit for the award; however, applicants must have a Master’s degree or doctorate (or equivalent) in health services, health policy research or a related topic.

The fellowship has a value of up to $130,000 for a period of 12 months to cover travel costs, a living allowance, research, conference/seminar attendance. A supplemental allowance of approximately $60,000 – including roundtrip airfare, living allowance, and health insurance – is also provided to Fellows accompanied by a spouse and/or children up to age 18.

Up to 13 Fellows are selected annually, typically one from Australia, one from Canada, one from France, two from Germany, two from the Netherlands, one from New Zealand, one from Norway, and four from the United Kingdom.
