Turing Scheme for Higher Education Institutions Opens to Applications
Announced in December 2020, the new £110 million Turing scheme will support UK students to take advantage of the benefits of studying and working abroad from September 2021. The scheme will look to target students from disadvantaged backgrounds.
The scheme replaces the Erasmus+ scheme in the UK and will fund 35,000 global exchanges from September 2021, including university study, school exchanges, and industry work placements.
This funding allows organisations to provide students, learners and pupils with the chance to develop new skills, gain vital international experience and boost their employability. They can also develop a wide range of soft skills, language skills and a better understanding of other cultures.
Education Secretary Gavin Williamson said:
“This is a landmark step in delivering on our promise to level up a truly global Britain, strengthening our ties across the world and providing students with the skills they need to thrive.
“The programme’s focus on social mobility and value for money will open up more opportunities for international education and travel to all of our students, especially for those from disadvantaged backgrounds who were less likely to benefit from the previous EU scheme.
“I urge all universities, schools and colleges from all corners of the UK to start their applications and partner up with countries worldwide.”
Funding opportunities are available for UK organisations in these sectors:
Higher education (HE)
Further education (FE) and vocational education and training (VET)
Schools.
Eligible applicants for the HE strand must be an officially recognised higher education provider registered in the UK or a British Overseas Territory.
Students do not need to be UK nationals to be eligible for the scheme. They can be studying full time, part time or have recently graduated.
Organisational support will be made available and covers the costs directly linked to the administration and implementation of a placement. Under each project, £315 will be provided per participant for the first 100 participants. From the 101st participant onwards, £180 will be provided per participant.
An amount of funding will be provided to go towards the general cost of living for each participant. This will vary depending on sector and destination country.
Participants from disadvantaged backgrounds on a higher education placement will receive a higher cost of living grant.
Applications must be submitted on the online application portal by the deadline of 9 April 2021 (12:00 noon).
