2024 Google PhD Fellowships in Computer Science Open to Application

Google offers PhD Fellowships in Computer Science as part of its Outreach programme to support outstanding graduate students undertaking exceptional innovative research as part of a PhD in computer science or related field.

Fellowships are zoned and are available in Africa, Australia and New Zealand, Canada and the United States, East Asia (Japan, Korea and Taiwan), Europe, India, Southeast Asia (Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam) and Latin America (excluding Cuba).

Applicants from Latin America, India and Southeast Asia may apply directly for a fellowship during the application window. Applicants from Africa, Australia and New Zealand, Canada and the United States, Europe and East Asia must be nominated by their university.

The fellowship includes a monetary award, which is paid directly to the host university to be distributed to cover the student’s expenses and stipend as appropriate.

The value and duration of the fellowship award is dependent on the host country:

Africa:

  • Maximum award: $12,000 to cover stipend, other research-related activities and travel expenses
  • Maximum duration: three years

Australia and New Zealand:

  • Maximum award: AUD $15,000 to cover stipend, other research-related activities and travel expenses
  • Maximum duration: one year

Canada and the United States:

  • Maximum award: full tuition and fees (enrolment fees, health insurance, books) plus a stipend to be used for living expenses, travel and personal equipment
  • Maximum duration: two years

East Asia:

  • Maximum award: $10,000 to cover stipend, other research-related activities and travel expenses
  • Maximum duration: one year

Europe:

  • Maximum award: annual bursary award (varies by country), to contribute to stipend/salary, healthcare, social benefits, tuition and fees, conference travel and personal computing equipment
  • Maximum duration: two years

India:

  • Early Stage PhD Students:
    • Maximum award: $50,000 to cover stipend, other research related activities and travel expenses
    • Maximum duration: up to four years
  • Late Stage PhD Students:
    • Maximum award: up to $10,000 to recognise research contributions, cover stipend, other research related activities and travel expenses
    • Maximum duration: one year

Latin America:

  • Maximum award: up to $15,000 per year to cover stipend and other research related activities, travel expenses including overseas travel
  • Maximum duration: two years

Southeast Asia:

  • Maximum award: up to $10,000 per year for three years (or until graduation) to cover stipend, other research related activities and travel expenses
  • Maximum duration: three years

Fellows will also be allocated a Google Mentor to provide support for the duration of the fellowship.

Nominating universities are expected to conduct an internal application process and are subject to a limit on the maximum number of candidates that they may nominate:

  • Universities from Australia and New Zealand may nominate a maximum of two eligible students
  • Universities in Canada and the United States may nominate a maximum of four eligible students
  • Universities in Africa, East Asia and Europe may nominate a maximum of three eligible students

For applicants from self-nominating countries (Latin America, India and Southeast Asia), there is no limit on the number of applications from any single university or institution.

The fellowship is effective from the start of the school year following a successful application.
