The Centre for Doctoral Training in Water and Waste Infrastructure and Services Engineered for Resilience (Water-WISER), based at the University of Leeds, is one of the doctoral training centres funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) to support the development of research capacity in areas of strategic significance.

Water-WISER focuses on research in support of United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 6: ‘Ensure access to Water and Sanitation for All’ and the associated sub-targets 6.1, 6.2 and 6.3, which relate primarily to infrastructure and services which deliver high quality resilient water supplies, sanitation, hygiene, faecal sludge and wastewater management and related services.

As a CDT, Water-WISER administers PhD studentships to support UK and EU students undertaking a PhD in water and waste water management at specialist water sanitation and waste management research centres in the UK, including:

  • Water, Public Health and Environmental Engineering Group at the University of Leeds
  • Water Engineering and Development Centre (WEDC) at Loughborough University
  • Water Science Institute at Cranfield University (CWSI)

The studentships offer funding over four years to fund a stipend, fees and fieldwork/laboratory costs. The programme will run for five years – to fund fifty studentships – with the final intake in September 2023.
