Marbach Fellowships

Closing Date: 30/09/2023

A fellowship is available to researchers around the world to undertake research projects in literature at the German Literature Archive Marbach, Germany.

Deutsches Literaturarchiv Marbach (DLA – German Literature Archive Marbach) is one of the most important literary institutions in the world. In its collections, it preserves a wealth of the most valuable sources of literary and intellectual history from 1750 to the present. Since it was founded in 1955, it has served literature, education and research. The collections are open to anyone doing source research.

The Marbach Fellowships (Marbach-Stipendien) are part of the Marbach Fellowship Programme (Marbach-Stipendienprogramm). They support research projects based on the DLA collections, which may include the holdings of the archive, the library, the documentation centre or the art collections. The research findings are expected to be published.

The Fellowships are awarded in three categories depending on academic qualifications. Postdoctoral Fellowships and Doctoral Fellowships can be granted for research stays at the DLA of one to four months. In addition, one-month residential Fellowships for Master’s and Staatsexamen candidates are available. The Fellowships may be divided into two parts by arrangement.

The research must be carried out at DLA in Marbach, Germany. Fellows will have the opportunity to stay at the DLA accommodation and conference facility, Collegienhaus, for the duration of the Fellowship. The rent is paid by the fellows themselves. This does not apply to residential Fellowships for Master’s candidates, where the rent is covered as part of the Fellowship.

Fellows can take part in the Fellows’ Café which takes place once a week for the purpose of networking. Moreover, fellows and visiting researchers will be able to present their projects at Wednesday Seminars.

The Marbach Fellowships are financed by the Federal Republic of Germany and the federal state of Baden-Württemberg, as well as by various patrons, companies and foundations.
