The German Historical Institute (GHI) in Washington DC is an internationally recognised centre for advanced study in the fields of German history in North America and American history in Germany. Its scope also encompasses comparative, international and global history as well as research in the fields of economics, sociology and political science. The GHI is particularly committed to promoting international scholarly exchange and collaboration by bringing together European and North American scholars, as well as academics from other parts of the world, in its conferences and research projects.

The biennial GHI Franz Steiner Award in Transatlantic History honours works in the field of North American studies or transatlantic relations from the early modern period to the present.
