DASA Competition: Novel Amphibious Craft

Closing Date: 10/01/2023

Funding from the Defence and Security Accelerator (DASA) for technologies that will help to develop a Novel Amphibious Craft fit for the threats of the 21st Century.

The Defence and Security Accelerator (DASA) is part of the UK Government’s Ministry of Defence. The Accelerator helps public and private innovators develop their ideas into exploitable products and services for defence and security customers, and experiments with novel methodology and innovative approaches to facilitate accelerating delivery of the best solutions.

DASA has launched the Novel Amphibious Craft competition with funding from the Defence Innovation Unit to develop innovations that can help to develop a novel craft to enable Commando Forces to safely and rapidly insert themselves into high-threat environments.

The competition is seeking innovative technologies up to Technology Readiness Level (TRL) 6 that could be included in a capability concept that will satisfy all the following requirements:

  • Travel at sustained high speed (at least 25kts) over a long range (up to 350 nautical miles) in Sea State 2.
  • Provide the ability to deliver personnel and light vehicles to a coastal access point with limited or no impact on operational speed/capability.
  • Relaunch and return from the coastal access point.
  • Operate with a low signature across all spectrums (thermal, radar, visual, acoustic etc) to reduce the probability of detection.

DASA is also interested in innovation to components or subsystems that could support or enable solutions to these requirements.

Proposals need to develop robust, reliable and durable systems that can be operated by Royal Marines and maintained by Royal Navy Engineers in harsh remote environments. DASA is seeking innovative and effective technologies that can be easily manufactured, repaired and maintained at scale once developed.

The competition has two themes. Innovators can apply for funding in either theme.

Theme 1: Priority Challenges

Theme 1 aims to address the following technical challenges faced by the capability:

  • Theme 1a: How to reduce the signature across multiple spectrums (thermal, radar, visual, acoustic etc).
  • Theme 1b: How to deliver the Commando Force (troops and vehicles) across the water gap and minimise the requirement for wading.
  • Theme 1c: How to land onto/retract from an unprepared coastal access point.

Theme 2: Capability Design

Theme 2 aims to design a craft capable of delivering the complete capability defined above. This is a lower TRL theme up to TRL 4.

Projects should aim to start late February 2023 and must be completed by 14 February 2024.
