CO2RE Hub Pathfinders Call 1: Greenhouse Gas Removal Research Grants

Grants for early stage research to explore new methods for capturing greenhouse gases from ambient air or the marine environment and durably storing or converting them.

The CO2 Removal Hub (CO2RE Hub) is a national research hub comprising a multidisciplinary team of 19 academic experts on greenhouse gas removal in the UK. CO2RE Hub is backed by seven institutions and is located at the Smith School of Enterprise and the Environment at the University of Oxford. It is funded through the UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) Strategic Priorities Fund (SPF) Greenhouse Gas Removal Demonstrators Programme.

As part of its programme of work, the CO2RE Hub has a Flexible Fund that supports work to address research and engagement gaps through: Pathfinder R&D calls for proposals to address gaps in greenhouse gas removal innovation; knowledge exchange and capacity building; and engagement and collaborations. The Flexible Fund is managed by Imperial College London on behalf of the CO2RE Hub. Applications for Pathfinder projects will be invited annually (2021-2024). A £600,000 total budget has been allocated to the Pathfinder mechanism.

CO2RE Hub is inviting applications for its Pathfinders Call 1: Greenhouse Gas Removal Research Grants. Applications are invited to explore new methods for capturing greenhouse gases from ambient air or the marine environment and durably storing or converting them.

Projects which strategically address part of a removal method (such as capture, purification, or novel approaches to storage or conversion) will be considered, as well as full-chain methods. Proposals should be focused on early stage research to inform basic principles and technological conceptualisation (eg technology readiness levels 0-2).

The call’s primary objective is to fill a clear gap in the Greenhouse Gas Removal Demonstrators Programme’s portfolio – removal techniques that do not rely on biological or land-based approaches, but which use novel physicochemical approaches that may not only permanently remove greenhouse gases, but also create co-benefits or collateral value through beneficial services or new products.

CO2RE Hub is keen to fund projects that not only have future removals potentials using physico-chemical approaches but also innovations that may or will also have the capacity to remove and sequestrate greenhouse gases in perpetuity (or at least over century timescales) and which demonstrate a capacity to deliver greenhouse gas removal that has an added benefit to the environment, society or the economy.

Submissions from multiple disciplines are encouraged but not required. Examples of disciplines which might participate include chemical engineers, chemists, biotechnologists, mechanical engineers, combustion experts, civil engineers, physicists, materials scientists, design engineers, social scientists, economists, and those working in the arts and humanities.
