BCI Ocean Innovation Prize

Prize to reward and support market-based innovations that mitigate climate change through human-centred, ocean-related strategies and solutions.

The Blue Climate Initiative (BCI) seeks to accelerate ocean-related strategies to address the climate crisis through innovation, research and collaboration.

BCI’s Ocean Innovation Prize, worth $1 million overall, is designed to reward and support market-based innovations that mitigate climate change through human-centred, ocean-related strategies and solutions inspired by BCI’s Transformational Opportunities. Applications are invited from innovators and entrepreneurs acting individually or through a business/organisation based in any country.

Proposals must incorporate an innovative technology, practice, model, approach or idea that is capable of being scaled to have an impact on climate change. Commercial viability and scale potential can be demonstrated through products/services for consumers, businesses, governments or other entities.

BCI takes a holistic view of ‘innovation’ (ie a new or under-used technology, practice, model, approach or idea) and ‘science’ (ie evidence-based knowledge encompassing a broad range of areas including eg biology, engineering, chemistry, social sciences etc).

Projects must have proof of concept or early momentum and must be able to be implemented within 1 year, achieve results within 1-3 years, be co-designed or co-delivered by knowledge generators and users, and be designed to scale within 2-4 years.
