Funding to support important aspects of research in the area of religion, such as fieldwork or travel to archives and libraries.

The American Academy of Religion (AAR) is a US-based scholarly society dedicated to the academic study of religion. Its mission is to foster excellence in the academic study of religion and enhance the public understanding of religion.

Within the framework of the AAR Individual Research Grants, funding is available to support important aspects of research, such as fieldwork or travel to archives and libraries. All eligible grant proposals will be reviewed and assessed using the following criteria:

  • Clarity and focus of the research to be pursued
  • Contribution to scholarship in a field or subfield of religion and significance of the contribution for advancing the understanding of religion or for advancing interdisciplinary discussions between religion and other humanistic and social science disciplines
  • Adequacy of the overall work plan, including goals, objectives, and time frame for the completion of the project
